3/30 continuation on presentation about Media coverage of Iraq

I want to clear up exactly what these 75 ex military officers "lied" about.
As noted in my handout, I provided ample information to thier motive as to bend the truth in thier favor. Many of these ex officers, as I stated would stand to personally benefit from continuing military efforts in Iraq as they had military contracts or sat on boards that had military contracts that were contingent on the militarization on Iraq.
Something I omitted for my presentation which I wanted to verbally convey to you all was what exactly was done that would be considered a lie. I will provide this now.
A report that ground soldiers were improperly outfitted with body armor made the news. Pentagon records show that there was deliberate planning on thier part to counter act this with ex military testimony that spoke to the effectiveness with their outfitted armor. This was deliberate, it was not true, the testimonial was indeed said to counteract the lack of proper outfits for soldiers.
Additionally, emails between members of the Bush administration and John C. Garret, a retired military officer who provided testimony to news outlets, showed that Garret communicated with the administration before an address in January 2007 and asked, "Please let me know if you have any specific points you want covered or that you would prefer to downplay"
These is obviously not all of the documented occurrences but I would argue , some of the most egregious occurrences of "lying"
I understand the restraint someone might show when approaching this but I am comfortable saying that these examples are clear indicators that lying occurred.

Abortion

So, the idea is that a fetus has a potential 'future like ours' or 'valuable future' and should not be deprived of it. But such an argument has implications:

> It has to take into account the general populace. Outside the realm of the European Union and Western liberal democracies, majority cases of pregnancy have complications due to reasons like the lack of medicine, proper health care, awareness and lack of planning in many developing countries
. To quote WHO "In 2015, an estimated 303 000 women will die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. In addition, for every woman who dies in childbirth, dozens more suffer injury, infection or disease." That means around 4 million women will suffer health wise. What's happens is the happiness, quality of life, health, economic stability and even ability to get proper nutrition of a woman is put under serious jeopardy due to unplanned pregnancy especially in developing countries
>In many cases a lot of fetuses don’t even reach infancy. And even if they make it to birth, they grow up in poor conditions, poverty, disease, war and bad quality of life.

> We have something that doesn’t even exist in the present moment  and the certainty of its valuable future (a bright and good one) is not that bright, can we then say that in this case a woman’s right to happiness, comfort, health, economic stability, and the fetus's right to not have a bad life > right to life of the fetus?

about the blog

Hi all,

This blog is meant for student discussion of the issues considered in the course.  I mean that broadly not narrowly.  In fact, I'm happy if there's some ethically interesting issue you want to say or ask something about, even if we won't be discussing it in this class at all.  For instance, if you're interested in your classmates' opinions about some ethical matter, you can ask them about it here.  I strongly suggest that you input your email in the "Follow by Email" box to the right; otherwise you'll have to come here and check to see if anything's been added.  Here's the blog for one of my courses last semester, to give you a sense of what might develop.  However, that was a 200-level course; I'm not expecting posts as extensive as those.  Also remember that the shorter your posts, the more likely they'll be read and responded to.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

Jon
